Nice work if you can get it, and if you get it, stop blowing already.
I hear it's hard to make money as an actor. I hear this from waiters, mostly. I do see some pretty talented people go without work because they just don't have the right look, know the right people, or blow the right producer. You know, all that shit. But I'm no expert on the movie industry. I'm just this guy who needs to go back to venting about stuff that sucks.
Actors can make or break a movie. Whether you like them or not, you pretty
much know what you're getting when you watch Edward Norton, Steve Buscemi, or
Kevin Spacey. They might pick a bad film, but they'll do a good job. Then
there's someone like Vince Vaughn who, up until recently, could be counted on to
make an otherwise mediocre film good.
Then there are certain actors who are bad (poor at conveying emotion and/or have
a very limited range), yet they make good films. Ben Affleck, much as I think he
sucks, was in Good Will Hunting, Boiler Room, Mallrats, Paycheck, Dazed and
Confused, and School Ties. Keanu Reeves has been in Constantine, The Matrix, and
both Bill & Ted films. Hayden Christensen was awful in Star Wars, but he was
absolutely incredible in Shattered Glass. So there is no guarantee that a bad or
limited actor will not make good work.
There is a line to be drawn between the bad actors and the unwatchable
ruin-every-film actors of the world. The following is a short list of actors
whose very appearance in a movie makes me think thrice before considering it.
FIRST, a special mention goes out to "actors" who owe me money for their "music" careers:
Hilary Duff
Lindsay Lohan
Jennifer Lopez
AND now on to general suckage...
John Travolta
Ben
Stiller
Shawn/Marlin Wayans
Mary-Kate/Ashley Olson
Alec Baldwin (and to a lesser degree, the entire family.)
Rob Schneider
Colin Ferrel
Will Ferrel
Julia Roberts
Denis Leary (though very funny, his movies are all awful.)
Vin Diesel
Mel
Gibson
Pauly Shore
Steven Seagal
Chris Tucker
Bill Bellamy
Cedric The "Entertainer"
Jimmy Fallon
Carmen Electra
Charlie Sheen
M'kay. That should do it for now. That felt good. I reserve the right to update this at any time. And check this out. I found the most awesome tool in movie trivia ever.
