Da Man Vs. The Man

I've noticed that calling someone "da" or "the" can mean radically different things. "The man" is usually trying to "keep you down," whereas "da man" is often someone trying to get you high. I try to avoid both characters, but they still effect me in profound ways.

While the terms can be applied in a number of ways, I've observed that "da" is almost always a complement. "The" goes either way. This is annoying, so I want to sort this out once and for all.

da Man

THE Man

  • has "the stuff."
  • is trying to take it all away.
  • is good at playing basketball.
  • is good at oppressing minorities.
  • sets you free, or helps you escape.
  • locks you up.
  • is smooth with the ladies.
  • considers women these days  too "uppity."
  • could fairly be said to be "like butter."
  • has a kind of "rotting meat" quality.
  • questions himself, and expresses what he feels.
  • believes most of what daddy said.
  • makes people happy.
  • ass-rapes elderly people for humor.
  • writes self-indulgent web pages.
  • okay, this line doesn't belong here.
  • likes, and is adored by, children.
  • pretends to like children, because he needs more soldiers.
  • makes good people feel empowered.
  • cuts good people down to feel better about himself.
  • solves yo' problems.
  • causes your problems, then lies and giggles about it.

I decree here and now, if you mix these up at a future date, you are wrong. The penalty is only a modest 40 slugs in the groin, but that should be enough to warrant being careful. Here are some popular figures to help keep things clear.

He's da Man: He's THE Man:

Basketball was (uhhhh) one of Einstein's little-known talents, but I suppose it's possible that not all "the men" actually rape the elderly for humor.
