FussyPucker, contrary to what some think of when they first hear it, is a complicated reference to the way that I live my life and the way that I feel life should be lived. To pucker fussily is a fun thing people do sometimes when connecting intimately. It is cute, warm, caring, and often sloppy (though hopefully not excessively so). We all do this sometimes when we kiss, and it is one of the most honest human moments that I know. This is the way I feel that life should be lived in general.
When I was twelve, my mother sent me to a rabbi to learn Hebrew and prepare for a Bar Mitzvah. I never finished it. It was a lot of work I wasn't ready for, and I didn't want to commit to something I didn't fully believe. Plus I wasn't forced to, as are many Jewish kids. The rabbi was unusual, 80-years-old, an interfaith teacher in his third marriage (now to a woman almost thirty years his younger), and he often wore all white as opposed to the normal black garb that most rabbis sport. Though I never went through with the ceremony, I have kept with me and will never forget one thing he stated: "You must treat everything you encounter with gentle love, just as though you are kissing it."
He would point to the table on which I would normally throw my notebook, an act I did out of habit even after he'd told me it bothered him. "You must kiss the notebook, " he'd say. "You must kiss the table." Well, I thought it was very silly to treat inanimate objects with special attention, and I told him so. He said that I should at least try my best.
I don't know, as of this writing, if it's realistically possible to treat everything with love? Let alone for a 13-year-old. It has, however, stuck with me. I believe the single biggest secret to being happy is no secret at all. We simply must be fussy in choosing who and what we bring close to our hearts, so that we can be as gentle and loving with as much of our environment as possible. That's what the name FussyPucker is all about.
Also, it's a pun that refers to sweet sweet vaginal intercourse. So sue me.
